Cathy
DeWitt is the Musician in Residence for the Shands Arts in Medicine
program at both Shands hospitals in Gainesville, Florida, where
she plays and sings at the bedside for patients, trains and mentors
other hospital musicians, and gives workshops on music as stress-management
for caregivers. As a consultant
on music & healing, she has been a presenter at
national conferences and helped to start several new arts in healthcare
programs throughout the state of Florida. |

She plays guitar, harp, piano, and sings in many areas
of the hospital, including the Atrium lobby, the BMTU, the NICU,
the Pediatrics units, the Liver Transplant Unit, and the Heart Transplant
Unit. She also does outreach, playing in many community venues,
as well as follow-up with patients who are moved to Rehab or Hospice.
As Music Coordinator, she screens, mentors and trains music volunteers,
including interns from the College of Music. She schedules
musicians to play the lobby piano every day, arranges music in other
hospital areas and for special events, produces concerts and fund-raisers
in the community, and facilitates the weekly performing artist concert
series in the Atrium lobby at Shands. Through a grant from Children's
Miracle Network, she helped procure a grand piano for the lobby
at Shands Hospital, which has become a focal point for patients
and families. She is very active in the local arts community, has
been a member of the Cultural Affairs Board, and is currently on
the board of the Gainesville Friends of Jazz & Blues and the
Friends of Florida Folk.
Now
over ten years old, Shands Arts in Medicine is one of the pioneer
arts-in-healthcare programs in the country. With twelve artists
in residence mentoring a large group of volunteers, AIM is able
to offer a constant and varied array of programs, and is now visible
in nearly every area of the hospital. Recently AIM also expanded
to include the local Planetree affiliate, Shands Alachua General
Hospital, (AGH), as a site. Visit
the Shands
Arts in Medicine site for more
